Yes, we have gone full circle from our very first post on the 9th March 2010 when we started this blog as today we are thrilled to let you know that our good friends at The Illawarra Feltmakers have announced the dates of the 12th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence.

It will be held from 1st to 6th September 2013 in the Illawarra Region of New South Wales, Australia.

The 12th Southern Hemisphere Convergence Organisers have set up their blog at http://12thsouthernhemispherefeltingconverge.blogspot.com/ so tune in there to keep up with what's being planned. The Bunbury Felting Group are proud to be their first blog followers.

We are so looking forward to it. Wishing you all the best with the organising guys. See you all again in September 2013.

Well, the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence is well and truly over and we hope you all had a wonderful time. The feedback that we have had from you has all been positive. It has been satisfying to see the results of the Committee's hard work over the last two years come to fruition.

Along the way we have had many helpers and we sincerely thank everyone involved in making the event happen. We have been constantly over whelmed by peoples' generosity.

Particular thanks go to our sponsors, the traders and individuals who contributed to the goody bags and prize draws. Please seek them out to do business with in the future, they are all specialists in their fields and will give you the benefit of their expertise.

Others with expertise that was willingly shared with us was that of our very talented photographers Toni C and Lyn Pix . They have generously provided us with their time and their amazing images for use in our publications and promotional material and of course the fashion cd which Camera House Bunbury worked really hard to get ready for Thursday night. Thank you all.

Our gratitude goes to Michelle Jones who's new business AM Management provided us with the "non felter" models for our fashion parade. Her models kindly donated their evening to us and were absolutely beautiful. Thank you guys, we really appreciated your help and involvement in making this a professional event. We also need to congratulate the hairdressers and makeup artists and the dressers who came in to make the fashion parade work like a dream.

Thank you to Gary Palfrey-Jones and Victoria Gelmi who helped all the tutors with their IT issues. Great job guys.

Thank you to everyone who brought their work along to share whether it was in the fashion parade, the Bazaar Night or the display of work. We were thrilled by the amount of participation. You really made the Convergence buzz.

Finally we would like to thank the talented tutors for donating their time and knowledge. Convergence is a gathering of felt makers and sharing knowledge is the underlying theme. Without your big hearted attitude there would not be a Convergence.

In time this blog will disappear into the blogosphere. It was only intended to communicate on the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence and therefore has no relevance going forward. We intend however to ramp up our Bunbury Felting Group blog and we hope that you will join us there to enjoy our further adventures in felt.

Farewell and we hope to see you all in 2013 in New South Wales for the 12th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence.

Our Fabulous Tutors

When we were compiling the information on our tutors for your registration packs we realised how many of them have had their work included in magazines.

In fact if you are flicking through the pages of the latest issue of Textile Forum you will find Anne Foy's work on page 22.

Then, while sitting having a quiet moment with our new book "500 Felt Objects" we spotted the work of two of our tutors - Maude Bath and Liz Clay.

If you are not familiar with these publications then rush out and get them now. 500 Felt Objects has just been published and is an absolute gem.

We have a very talented group of tutors to delight you with next week. Thank you to all who have agreed to tutor. Without you there can be no Convergence.

Yes, as you can see Val grows her own wool supplies which probably explains why she is such a prolific felter and frequently includes black in her designs!

What to Pack

With only a few days to go before the Convergence begins, you will probably be getting your bags packed so we thought we would remind you of a few things to bring.

The newsletters have included a packing checklist but one item not on it was Personal Insect Repellant. There have been quite a lot of mosquitos in the Grammar School Grounds – particularly in the evenings, wo we suggest you bring some personal insect repellent to help prevent bites.

Here's the rest of the checklist.

Bring your felt making gear if you would like to do some felting on site.

Wool and other provisions will be available every day from our Traders Hall. Traders Hall consists of a range of textile oriented suppliers and will be open daily. Many Traders will share their expertise through ongoing demonstrations.
Stock up here with all your felting needs.

Plastic bags will be useful for transporting any still wet sample pieces.

Notebook and pens/pencil for taking notes at tutorials and lectures and jotting down all those felting ideas.

Some business cards will be useful – both for passing on to new friends with your contact details and also for labelling your work on our Display of Work area – details below.

Your felt garments and accessories for the Fashion Parade.

Your felt creations for the Display of Work area.

Your felt Banner.

Your suitcase full of creations for the Suitcase Bazaar Night.

What you need for the Days Theme .

Don’t forget your camera.

There have been quite a lot of mosquitos in the Grammar School Grounds – particularly in the evenings. We suggest you bring some personal insect repellent to help prevent bites.

Please be aware that there is not a bank or ATM close to the school. There will be plenty of goodies to buy at the Convergence in the Traders Hall and our Bazaar Night so remember to bring plenty of cash in your wallet but keep it safely on you at all times.

The Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is not licensed to sell alcohol so if you want to share a glass of wine at dinner with your felting friends you’ll need to bring your own.

The Bizarre Bazaar - Suitcase Exhibition

At 7.00pm on Wednesday 5th October the Cafeteria at the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School will be transformed into a busy eastern souk .

This is a great opportunity to sell your work. Bring your suitcase full of creations and open it up for sale. Even combine with others if you have only a few items.

Items do not need to be felt, they can be any medium. If you have some special things in your stash that are excess to your needs consider bringing them along so that others get the chance of enjoying and using them. You can then use the money you raise to buy more things for your stash!!

There is no charge for participating – we want lots and lots of suitcases to create a fun enjoyable evening for all.

Please remember to invite your friends and family to join us. Just direct them to this blog - the information regarding the event is all at the top of the right hand side bar.

A big thank you to Sylvia Riley of Silksational for sending us a 3 metre prefelt in a natural colour for us to use in one of the fabulous prize draws we have arranged for Convergence participants next week.

Sylvia told us that she had only recently found out about the Felt Convergence and would have liked to be a trader if there had been a bit more time to get organised. However as she really wanted to be part of things she was going to send us the prefelt and some flyers on Silksational.

Do have a look at the information on them. Silksational are a wholly owned Australian company based in Sydney. Their aim is to make textile art affordable and within easy reach of everybody. They supply mostly by mail order a wide range of items for the textile artist including silk painting supplies such as silk and dyes; dyeing supplies such as powdered dye, chemicals, beakers, pots; silk clothing blanks, silk scarves and sarongs, silk cushion covers and of course silk, wool, cotton, silk-bamboo and linen by the metre. A new addition to their range are fibres and woollen prefelts.

Brilliant, expressive, inspiring work representing the diversity of textile and fibre art across the world. This exhibition is brought to us by Bunbury Regional Art Galleries in partnership with Fibres West 2011.

As we have mentioned, we really need your help to make the Convergence Fashion Parade a success.

We have the auditorium, photographer, models and music but only 49 attendees have so far indicated that they will be providing garments for it! We need you to bring your creations to make this a fabulous night of fashion.

You don’t need a complete outfit to participate. Remember that accessories are the key to fabulous dressing so please bring your scarves, bags, hats and wraps. These will all create amazing looks for the catwalk. There is no limit on the number of pieces you can enter into the Fashion Parade so pack plenty as the more pieces there are the bigger and better the event will be. Don’t be shy, this is your fashion night so be part of it.
We really don't want to hear those dreaded words "my stuff's not good enough". So be confident in your creations; you will be so pleased you participated when you see your things out out on the catwalk.
You can model your own garment or have it paraded by the models that we will be providing.

Matilda will be so pleased to have something to wear.

Meet Carole

Some of us recently did a workshop with Carole Redlich a talented textile artist who now lives in Alvie, Victoria. (Previously she lived here in WA and used to work at the Thread Studio).

Carole's "Shadow Lands" workshop was all about creating sculpture from fishing lines and translucent plastics -

Yes, it's the exact opposite of felt, but of course we immediately spotted Carole's stunning felt jacket -

Looks like next time we will be booking a felting workshop with Carole. She's an experienced machine embroiderer too and combines these techniques as you can see, to make some amazing garments.

Carole says "My work is always developmental. I grow with every new piece I make, I love the stimulation, and challenge of creating a new piece of work and the agony of resolution. I have exhibited widely and love teaching and sharing with others. My workshops are diverse and entertaining, covering a wide range of topics (experimental stitch, felting, wire jewellery, pattern stitching and laminating plastics to name a few!). There is always a new adventure around the corner and a new red herring to follow"!

Convergence Announcement - Travel Arrangements

We are aware that many of our overseas and interstate participants will be flying into Perth airport and then making their way down to Bunbury.

If you are arranging to travel to Bunbury by bus or train once you arrive at the Bunbury bus or train stations you will then need to make your way to the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School which is about 10km south of Bunbury.

If you need assistance getting from the Bunbury train or bus station please let us know by emailing feltconvergence2011@westnet.com.au . Please head your email “Travel Arragements” and let us know how you are planning to travel to Bunbury and your estimated time of arrival.

Eoin's promotional blurb says "Breakfast with Eoin Cameron on 720 ABC Perth is the best way to start the day" and Margaret sets the scene with this hearty calorie laden order of eggs, beans and sausage -

There is no charge for participating.

This event will be open to the public and we are busy promoting it - free entry and free parking.

If you have friends in the area make sure you let them know about it and encourage them to join us.

Yurt Update

Back in December we published this post on the National Yurt Building Project where a fabulous yurt was made at the Mittagong Textile Fibre Forum in 1998.

We asked the question "where is it now"?

Well we were thrilled today to receive a comment on the original post from Martien van Zuilen (the founder and creator of the Yurt Project) who tells us -

"The Yurt is Alive and Very Well!
It is currently in Victoria and, after 13 years the project is going strong. The Yurt will next appear at the TAFTA Fibre FORUM Conference at Geelong; September 25th-October 1st.

Make Your Convergence Banner

In Bunbury we will be supporting the tradition of past Convergences for all attendees to felt a banner to be displayed and then sold to raise money to help finance the next Convergence.

We therefore need you to bring a felt banner to the Convergence. The size should be approximately A4 (that's the size of a standard piece of printer paper).

Traders Hall Update - New Trader - Rock View Alpacas

Things are getting busy in the Traders Hall and we are very pleased to welcome Rock View Alpacas to provide you with all the lovely soft alpaca that you need to create the softest warmest lightest garment ever.

Keen felter Maureen Foss runs Rock View and has been building up their herd for several years now.

The softest, whitest fibres come from the baby alpaca, and they are cute too.

Maureen's alpacas have won prizes in shows Australia wide as has her alpaca felting.

Alpaca requires a slightly different felting technique so Maureen will be on hand to demonstrate techniques and give some tips and she'll have plenty of lovely alpaca for sale including batts.

With only a month to go and the clock swiftly ticking towards the start of the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence starting here in Bunbury the Organising Committee is busy putting together the final arrangements for our fabulous felting event.

We hope you are enjoying sharing some of our tasks and arrangements through our blog and maybe even wishing you were part of things here at Felt Central.

Well the big question is where will the next Convergence be?

We have participants coming from all over the globe so who knows who will pick up the baton.

Will it be somewhere new like Tasmania? All that wonderful scenery for us to enjoy and the perfect felting climate.

Or perhaps New South Wales or Queensland. All those active ACT felters may want to put their hands up perhaps? Or the New Zealanders again? What about Victoria? Who felts in South Australia?

Traders Hall Update - Nannas Notions

Another new Trader attending the Convergence on Wednesday 5th October including the Bazaar Night is Lyn Bolton who runs Nannas Notions down in Bridgetown WA.

Nannas Notions provides vintage sewing and knitting notions as well as turned wooden notions. Exactly the sort of things we felters need to finish off our hand made garments as so often modern commercial products really don't work for us do they?

We are really looking forward to seeing Lyn and her old sewing notions at the Convergence.

The Wednesday of Bazaar Night looks as if it is going to be a great opportunity to stock up on all sorts of goodies so remember to bring your cash!

Our model - Matilda has nothing to wear to the Convergence. Can you help dress her?

Matilda is one of the models appearing at the Convergence Fashion Parade but we are worried that she may have absolutely nothing to wear.

We have the auditorium, photographer, models, music and lightshow but so far only 49 Convergence attendees have indicated that they will be providing garments for it!

So please bring your beautiful garments and wearable art for a spectacular night of entertainment with your work on show at this fashion event.

You can model your own garment or have it paraded by the models that we will be providing. Professional photographers will be taking pictures of the catwalk show and a CD of the event will be available for purchase at a nominal cost at the end of the Convergence.

We need you to bring your creations to make this a fabulous night of fashion and to dress Matilda of course!

Traders Hall Update - Sheryl Chant

Things are getting busy in our Traders Hall and we are pleased to announce that Sheryl Chant has contacted us and is going to be joining us on Wednesday 5th October which is our Bazaar Night.

Sheryl is a highly qualified artist and has exhibited throughout Australia for many years. She specialises in primitive firing saying

"I employ a variety of firing techniques, from oxides on green ware to Raku to pit and saggar and smoke firing. The thrill of the unpredictable, the excitement of heat and flame, each firing is an experiment, an adventure for me".

Local firm Royal Gala Tours operate a Bunbury Afternoon Tour every Wednesday afternoon.

Country Cottage Wool Wear specialise in silks. We all know how important that fibre is and how it melds beautifully with wool fibres to lift our felt by imparting luminous shine and colour.

Country Cottage Wool Wear will be bringing a range of silks for us to enjoy at the Convergence. They have about 30 colours of each silk so you are bound to find the one that's right for you.

Bilby Yarns is an interesting business and if you visit their website by clicking on the link in our Traders Hall area of the right hand side bar, you will see that they take wool very seriously indeed.

They specialise in naturally coloured West Australian wool fleece, tops and yarns. They like undyed chemical free products that are eco friendly.

If you want colour, then they have a natural dye range produced from Western Australian plants, so if you want to do some organic dying without getting your legs all scratched then this is the place to visit. (We really love the emphasis on the West Australian product).

They also sell supplies for spinning, weaving, knitting and felt making including both new and secondhand equipment, and stock other fibres, dyes, kits, magazines, cottons and tapestry yarns.

Earlier this year a “Celebrity Art Bra” event was held to raise funds for the Val Lishman Health Research Foundation Breast Cancer Survivors Project.

As we all have friends and family that have been affected by the disease The Bunbury Felters were keen to get involved and create some art bras for the event.

A celebrity was chosen for each artist to create a “bra” for. You will see why we have used inverted commas around the word bra as we show you the bra art in the weeks to come.

The bras are not all felt but they are all fun and fabulous so we know you want to see them. Keep looking in at the blog to see them appear from time to time.

Our first bra was created by designer Jean Braund. Her celebrity is Don Hancey - one of Western Australia’s most dynamic and innovative chefs known for his simple, yet brilliant, ability of pairing regional produce and premium Australian wines. Hi is a key supporter of the Chefs Long Table lunch events which to raise money for local charity each year.

Jean has captured the essence of Don in this mixed media creation.

The "cups" are baking tins of course.

All topped with a fish on a baking tray.

Our 11th December 2010 post was all about the Roller Felting Machine developed by Paul and Christine Harrison. They started their business - Snowy Creek Engineering about 15 years ago when they escaped from city life in Melbourne and started breeding alpacas in country Victoria. From there came an interest in felting and Paul put his engineering background to good use and developed a felting machine.

When we wrote the post about them in December they were not sure whether they could join us at the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence (it is quite a big piece of machinery to get all away across the country) but they really wanted to get here as they have been to other convergences and are big supporters of the bi-annual event.

We are now very pleased to tell you that Paul and Christine are going to be here in October and are transporting one of their Roller Felting Machines over for all of us to see. We are very excited about this because Paul and Christine are going to be running demonstrations throughout each day and want you to participate by bringing something to felt on the machine.

So bring some fabric and wool and make a scarf. Your piece should be no bigger than 125 centimetres by 35 centimetres. You will need to book a time with Paul and Christine to take it over to the Snowy Creek Roller Felting Machine and watch the rolling done for you!

Thank you guys, this is going to be a great opportunity for us to see the Roller Felting Machine in action.

In the meantime Snowy Creek Engineering also create and sell needle felting equipment (they are very kindly donating a needle felting kit as a door prize at the Convergence) so pop over to Traders Hall now by clicking on their name in our right hand sidebar and have a look at what they do.

Convergence Announcement - Draw for Master Classes

As previously announced the Convergence program will include Master Classes run by Anita Larkin the celebrated art felter who has made the world of felt sculpture her own and Liz Clay - the internationally renowned feltmaker and author.

Each Master Classes will run over 2 days and accommodate a maximum of 15 students.

As we expected, the demand for attending a Master Class has exceeded the number of places available, so a ballot has been run to determine places. We put the names of everyone who said they would like to be part of a Master Class into a hat (well actually it was a plastic ice cream box but it did the job). The Convergence Committee looked on as Convergence Convener Val Hornibrook drew out the names.

The lucky Master Class participants will be notified by email shortly.

If you don't receive an email from us then your name was not drawn. However our program provides lots of felt tutorials for you to enjoy and participate in.

Most importantly, we wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the Anita Larkin /Liz Clay experience so we have arranged for each of these felt masters to deliver two presentations to all Convergence attendees.

With only three months to go we are getting very excited.

Also we have had some queries regarding the cost of the Closing Cabaret Dinner so to make things absolutely clear please note:

The cost of both residential and non residential participants in attending the Closing Cabaret Dinner is included in your registration fee.
An additional payment is only required if you are bringing your partner and/or friends to the Closing Cabaret Dinner.

So to sum up -
If it's only you (the participant) coming to the Closing Cabaret Dinner it's included in your fees.

Moving away from scarves, let's have a look at some of the jackets featured on the catwalk.

This long sleeveless vest is created from a mix of silk and merino wool. We should make it clear that the merino wool is 100% Australian as the creator Lorraine McArthur is very committed to the promotion of the Australian wool industry which quite rightly she says produces the best wool in the world for making high quality felt for garments.

Saying that, we think this piece has a Japanese influence.

The felt pieces created by members of the Bunbury Felting Group were displayed under the label "Art to Wear Organic Fashion" which really captures the essence of hand made garments produced from Australian merino wool and natural fibres.

The parade opened with this felt nuno wrap by designer Jean Braund.

South West Fashion Felt - Back Stage Hair and Makeup

Behind the scenes the models cope with the less glamorous business of getting ready.

It was a very hot day and the space allotted to the models for changing was on the squishy side which explains why all the girls are so slim! They still manage to text at all times though.

Hair and makeup are a big part of the models' look and each girl had their own hairstyle created with felt accessories.

Aren't they amazing.

Red felt balls were an integral part of the styling.

South West Fashion Felt - Back Stage

Organisation back stage is essential as the clothes must all be sorted and laid out for each model to wear but at first the pile of garments looks more like nightmare in teenage daughters bedroom!

Calm and order is methodically introduced with the garments labelled.

Each outfit has been photographed on the model at the run through and the photos and name tags put with each outfit to avoid mix ups.

And voila, all is neatly organised on the rail ready for the models.

To set the scene; it was a very hot sunny day so we were pleased that the parade was in an air conditioned marquee set up specially for the occasion.

One of the best things about coming to a Felting Convergence is making friends with amazing felters from across the globe. Felters are such interesting people and busy with so many projects - not just felt. Perhaps all that rolling gives us time to think and plan our business and personal lives in new ways.

One such busy felter is June Hope who recently booked to attend the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence. We noticed that as well as felting she operates a gorgeous retreat Casa Verde near Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

She moved to Tasmania three years ago making a tree-change from hectic Melbourne where she ran a business. Now her main interests revolve around felting and running her lovely holiday property.

It looks the most perfect place for creating beautiful felt.

Convergence Announcement - Please Read This Before Making ANY EFT Payments

As our recent post said, the fully residential places for Convergence have sold out and there are only a few remaining non-residential places available.

Therefore we are requesting that no one makes any payments to us for new registrations by the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) method. If you wish to make a payment for a new registration by EFT please email us first. This will help us to confirm that there is a place available for you before you pay. This will assist us with our administration by preventing us having to arrange to refund monies to you if the Convergence non-residential places have sold out when you apply.

Remember to email us if you want to go on our waiting list for Convergence full residential places. We will put you on our waiting list.

Convergence Announcement - We Are Nearly Full

Places for the Convergence have been selling like hot cakes since we released our Information and Enrolment Form giving all the details of the Convergence.

We have now sold all the fully residential places. If you would like to be put on the waiting list for any residential places that come available please email us at feltconvergence2011@westnet.com.au.

We have some non-residential places still available. The number of non-residential places left are shown in the star at the top of our right hand side bar.

If you would like to attend on a non-residential basis please complete your Enrolment Form accordingly and return it to us as soon as possible with the full payment.

We think you will agree that this piece of art truly illustrates the versatility and beauty of felt in sculpture (and Val's felting skills of course).

Must See Event - South West Fashion Festival

In our last post we mentioned that we are having a fashion parade at the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence. Everyone's wonderful felt creations will be paraded on the catwalk in an evening of glamour and style.

We love to see felt on show and to get us in the mood for things to come at Convergence we are really looking forward to South West Fashion Festival - an exciting local fashion event designed to promote local designers, artists, photographers and retailers. Many of the models will be wearing stunning felt clothes and accessories created by members of the Bunbury Felters Group so we are thrilled to be involved in this event.

The South West Fashion Festival runs from 24th February 2011 to 26th February 2011.

We have had several emails from readers over the last couple of weeks saying how much they have enjoyed seeing all the amazing wearable art entries from the WOW World of WearableArt Show 2010 and how they feel inspired to create a garment of their own.

Well, if you are coming to the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence you will have a great opportunity to display your garment and accessory creations in our very own Fashion Parade that will be held on the evening of Tuesday 4th October 2011. Put the date in your diary now!

We will be having a spectacular night of entertainment with your work on show. So if you are coming to the Convergence remember to bring your beautiful garments and wearable art for this fashion event. We will be providing models for the catwalk show and all will be professionally photographed.

The pieces don't need to be as extravagant as the ones we have been showing in our recent WOW posts. To complete this series of posts on the WOW Awards Show 2010 here is the Winner of the 2010 Montana Supreme World of WearableArt™ Award and Winner American Express Open Section, It is titled Loops and was made by Yogesh Chaudhary and Manas Barve from India.

It is described as "a self-sufficient form of independence without any interference from foreign substances such as thread or glue".

What we find particularly thrilling about this piece is that is is made from merino wool felt. Isn't it clever? It has been laser cut to create that futuristic lace like look. Another great example of how versatile felt is.

If our recent posts have tempted you to enter the next World of Wearable Art event in 2011 but you are feeling a little intimidated by the size and complexity of the entries that we have shown, then consider the Bisarre Bra section. Though normally hidden, the bra has shown itself in past Montana WOW Awards to have potential for highly creative and witty reinvention.

Here is Val Hornibrook's entry constructed of course from felt.

Val's bra represents - "the circle of vessels is complete when sharing with visitors a delight that is within". The bra is a tremendous example of what can be achieved with felt. Each vessel was constructed using a resist then worked to create the final 3 dimensional urn shape.

This next bra titled Every Rose Has Its Thorns by Violet Oliver of Auckland uses completely different construction techniques.

It is made of metal and artificial rosebuds and was inspired by "watching my daughter breastfeeding her baby and how it symbolised beauty and love and seeing the need to protect this precious part of a woman".

The WOW World of WearableArt show is a fabulous event which is one that should be on everyone's "must do" list.
