Convergence is a gathering of felt makers and sharing knowledge is the underlying theme. It is four full days of immersion and indulgence in every aspect of felt making suitable for all levels of experience. Anyone interested in felt making and textiles should attend. There is no need to belong to a formal textile organisation or felting group. Just come along, learn, share, felt and have fun.

Circle of Vessels

In our post of 5th February we showed you this picture from Val Hornibrook's entry  into WOW's Bizarre Bra section.

Circle of Vessels by V Hornibrook WOW Awards Show 2010
This is one of WOW's official catwalk photos and all though it is lovely to see this amazing piece of underwear on the WOW catwalk many of you have commented that you cannot see the detail.

Here it is in all it's glory -

Circle of Vessels by Val Hornibrook

Val's entry to WOW described the bra as representing "The circle of vessels is complete when sharing with visitors a delight that is within".  We love the sentiment expressed in this piece -  food, drink, family, friends - all the really important things of life captured in this representation of the ancient Greek coil pots.

We think you will agree that this piece of art truly illustrates the versatility and beauty of felt in sculpture (and Val's felting skills of course).

World of WearableArt Awards Show 2010 Supreme Winner

To complete this series of posts on the WOW  Awards Show 2010 here is the Winner of the 2010 Montana Supreme World of WearableArt™ Award and Winner American Express Open Section,  It is titled Loops and was made by Yogesh Chaudhary and Manas Barve from India.

Loops by Yogesh Chaudhary and Manas Barve WOW Awards Show 2010

It is described as "a self-sufficient form of independence without any interference from foreign substances such as thread or glue".

In close up it looks like this -

What we find particularly thrilling about this piece is that is is made from merino wool felt.  Isn't it clever? It has been laser cut to create that futuristic lace like look.  Another great example of how versatile felt is.

Here are the creators of the piece with our own felter, photographer and WOW entrant - Kerry Gelmi -

Kerry tells us that Yogesh and Manas were charming young men and that the first thing they did on hearing that their entry was the 2010 Supreme Winner was to ring their families back in India.

Congratulations guys.

World of WearableArt Awards Show 2010 Continued

If our recent posts have tempted you to enter the next World of Wearable Art event in 2011 but  you are feeling a little intimidated by the size and complexity of the entries that we have shown, then consider the Bisarre Bra section.  Though normally hidden, the bra has shown itself in past Montana WOW Awards to have potential for highly creative and witty reinvention.

Here is Val Hornibrook's entry constructed of course from felt.

Circle of Vessels by V Hornibrook WOW Awards Show 2010
Val's bra represents -  "the circle of vessels is complete when sharing with visitors a delight that is within".  The bra is a tremendous example of what can be achieved with felt.  Each vessel was constructed using a resist then worked to create the final 3 dimensional urn shape.

This next bra titled Every Rose Has Its Thorns by Violet Oliver of Auckland uses completely different construction techniques.

Every Rose has its Thorns  by Violet Oliver WOW Awards Show 2010
It is made of metal and artificial rosebuds and  was inspired by "watching my daughter breastfeeding her baby and how it symbolised beauty and love and seeing the need to protect this precious part of a woman".

Like so many good ideas it is beautifully simple.

World of WearableArt Awards Show 2010 Continued

The WOW World of WearableArt show is a fabulous event which is one that should be on everyone's "must do" list.  The artists get to mingle with the models and meet their fellow artists and here is our felter, WOW 2010 exhibitor and 11th Southern Hemisphere Committee Member - Kerry Gelmi with this wonderful creation of Sean Purucker (USA) titled "Put a Cork in It".

"Put a Cork In It" By Sean Purucker WOW Awards Show 2010
This was an entry into WOW's "Open Section" (see our last post for more information on the Open Section) and is made of cork, resin, fabric, plastic, foam, glass.

Can you imagine having a conversation with this?  It represents "awkward moments when you have a slip of the tongue.  Sometimes it's better not speak".

"Put a Cork In It" By Sean Purucker WOW Awards Show 2010

We certainly identify with the sentiment - perhaps that's why we love this one so much?

World of WearableArt Awards Show 2010 Continued

WOW's "Open Section" has no thematic boundaries and gives the designer complete freedom in concept, construction and materials.

So if you have an idea for an amazing piece of wearable art get started on it and enter it into WOW 2011.  Look at this futuristic creation of Bonnie Begg and Christine White of Australia which is titled "Ecdysis".

"Ecdysis" by Bonnie Begg and Christine White WOW Awards Show 2010

This piece represents how creatures large and small shed their outer coverings.

"Ecdysis" by Bonnie Begg and Christine White WOW Awards Show 2010

It is made of fabric, irrigation tubing, wire, foil.

We just know we will never be able to throw anything out of the garden shed again!
